It’s officially Fall (even though the temperatures recently seem to still be stuck in summer mode and I’m not mad…) and you know what fall means to me?
It means windows open, cinnamon rolls for breakfast and squeezing in some scenic hikes at my favorite parks! It also means embracing change, charging up the camera and making the most of all the fall festivities with family and friends. In the blink of an eye the colors will peak, the will leaves drop and before we know it, winter is coming 😅
Whether you’re a lifelong Ohio resident, or just settling into your new home in the Dayton area, here’s your guide to making the most of this beautiful season and supporting small, locally owned businesses all at the same time.
I’m going to break this down into a few different categories so you can feel free to scroll through and find what suits you best. And leave your suggestions in the comments if I missed your favorite spot! I love to explore new places, and I will add your suggestion to my list to check out next 😊
Here we go!
Hidden Valley Orchards: Craving that quintessential autumn experience? Head to Hidden Valley Orchards in Lebanon, OH for apple picking, a bustling market with seasonal goodies, and relax in their “crate room” with a refreshing drink. It’s the perfect spot for a family outing or a date afternoon. Their calendar is packed with specialty events for the season, so be sure to head to their website to check that out before planning your trip. I don’t know about you, but I definitely don’t want to miss out on the Pumpkin Donut Days event coming up soon!
Penny Lane Art Gallery & Cafe: Two words…Coffee. Flights….Need I say more? Grab your bestie and take a trip to New Carlisle, OH to share one of Penny Lane’s coffee flights to explore all of their unique fall flavors. S’mores Latte, Pumpkin Cookie Latte, Salted Maple Cold Brew, Apple Crispy Latte….yes please!
Ellie’s Restaurant: This is one of my favorite places to relax and enjoy the charm of a small town! Located in the historical Mills Park Hotel in Yellow Springs, it elegant yet cozy, with a darling patio complete with oversized rocking chairs to enjoy a nice breeze. Make it a day trip with a hike at Glen Helen Nature Reserve, followed by a honey latte and brunch at Ellie’s. I love the sweet potato hash and I hear the chicken & waffles are a hit too! Their seasonal specials are just as delicious plus they have a calendar packed with one-of-a-kind events happening every single month!
Fox Hollow Rodeo: Saddle up for some Western fun that the whole family can enjoy! Bull riding, barrel racing, petting zoos, calf riding, funnel cakes…and more! The Fox Hollow Rodeo in Waynesville, OH offers so much to do for ages 6 and up, and it’s a truly unique experience that you can’t find just anywhere!
Katie’s Pumpkin Barn: It wouldn’t be fall without pumpkin picking! Katie’s Pumpkin Barn in Beavercreek is a mother/daughter-owned business that started 26 years ago and it’s a true staple to the area that’s a must-visit to pick out your pumpkins this fall. There is a small corn maze for the kids, and a handful of animals on the farm that your little ones will love getting to see up close and personal.
Youngs Jersey Dairy: A true Ohio landmark that offers fun for all ages! Hayrides, corn mazes, pumpkin picking, ice cream, putt-putt, batting cages, animal feeding…you name it! Young’s has such a variety of experiences to choose from that it makes it one of those places you can visit time and time again and always find something new to enjoy. Located in Yellow Springs, OH, it’s a great location to add to your daytrip alongside hiking & visiting Ellie’s!
Peifer Orchards: Pumpkins, apples, squash and more…Peifer Orchards offers all the fall essentials! Located just outside of downtown Yellow Springs, it’s such a gorgeous spot to visit after checking out the falls over at Glen Helen Nature Reserve. My favorite thing from Peifer Orchards? Their freshly pressed apple cider! Heads up, their apple cider is so popular that it often sells out on weekends during September and October, so be sure to call ahead to make sure it’s in stock if you’re hoping to grab some while you’re there. Peifer Orchards is also the best place to snag jams, jellies, and locally harvested honey and maple syrup. Annnd now I’m drooling…
Heather’s Gourmet Caramel Apples: One of the things I love most about Fall, is it’s officially oversized sweatshirt season, and that means more room to indulge in sweet treats! Heather’s Gourmet Caramel Apples in Springboro, OH is a hidden gem that has the most mouthwatering caramel apples you’ll ever find. Warning: you might just need to go back for seconds (or thirds!). Heather also offers seasonal treats like Pumpkin Brownies this time of year too, and trust me…you want to try these for yourself!
Barefoot Girl at Home: Want to refresh your home décor for fall? Barefoot Girl at Home in Springboro offers a curated selection of cozy throws, autumn candles, and seasonal accents that will turn your house into a warm and inviting haven. From personal care products to greenery and candles, it’s truly a one stop shop to grab all your fall essentials to cozy up your space!
